ABOUT ME

Programmer

Hello, I am Ben Otter, an avid tech enthusiast with so much love for all things video games and the evolving technological world.

I started my venture into the digital world when I was 5 years old in Primary School where I played loads of educational games. The day I first went onto a computer my teachers and parents couldn't get me off them. This led to me getting my first ever games console the Nintendo Wii. I loved the console, and it is still my favourite one of all time. Games such as Mario Kart Wii and New Super Mario Bros Wii influenced who I am today.

As I grew older, I became fascinated with how computers worked and how video games were made. I remember watching The Gadget Show and educational videos on YouTube of how Windows worked. Because of this, I managed to fix a computer which the IT technician in my school couldn't even fix by using my knowledge at age 11.

Once getting to Secondary School, I started playing more games such as Minecraft and Overwatch when I was older, and they are some of my favourite games of all time. I studied any computer course my school did and always striving in our ICT classes. While in school I became obsessed with eSports and the Overwatch League. I played in many competitive tournaments over my time in school and loved every second of making leadership and communication skills.

When getting to college I was finally able to study A Level Computer Science and start learning a coding language properly in an educational setting as my Secondary School did not offer it. At this time, I found other interests like Football and F1 through playing FIFA and F1 games respectively. The fact that a video game made me fall in love with a real-life sport made me realise that video games what I want to specialise in. There are countless memories, influences and opportunities video games have given me. I want to give gamers the same things I've had by programming as many games as I can.

However, the software which is the backbone of all games and the way we live is also something I want to do. Without software I use every day such as FaceTime and YouTube, I wouldn't be able to speak to friends and family as much. Plus, I wouldn't have been able to have as big of an understanding of technology without YouTube.

While it was hard at first, I managed to grasp how to code and fell in love with its and decided that it was what I wanted to do. Because of that, I am now studying Computer Science for Games at University.

All my life I've used software which I was interested in. From how the many ways it worked or playing games while wondering 'how does the console store my high score?'. That is why I want to create pieces of software which generations can look at, use, and wonder how it works. I want to inspire another generation of programmers to think different like I did.
